Introduction

Background

Recent years have witnessed a remarkable popularization of camera enabled mobile devices, such as camera phones and PDAs in our daily lives. Combined with wireless Internet, they now emerge as ubiquitous platforms for deployment of mobile visual search services and applications. Yet, some technical challenges still exists in design of such systems. A visual database for mobile image matching is typically stored in a cloud. Hence, for a visual comparison, information must be either uploaded from a mobile to a server, or downloaded from a server to a mobile. With relatively slow wireless links, the response time of a system heavily depends on how much information must be transferred in both directions. “Compact descriptorsor “image signaturesrepresent a special new class of technologies that can be used to reduce data rates and improve performance of mobile visual search applications.

The Workshop on Mobile Visual Search is the premier scientific forum for discussing the latest advances in the field of mobile visual search. The workshop is in its third year, following two successful prior events: workshop held in December, 2009, at Stanford University, CA, USA, and a workshop held in conjunction with the 93rd MPEG Meeting in July, 2010, Geneva, CH.

Goal

The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from both industry and academia to discuss latest advances and exchange views and experiences in design of algorithms, systems, and applications for visual search. Topics of interest include: information on existing state of the art technologies for visual search and their performance, visual search standardization activities in MPEG and JPEG, design of compact descriptors, the use of side information like GPS and RFID for improved design of descriptors and visual search system, and similar topics. The technical program for workshop will include two sessions: invited talks and forum. The forum session will include presentations of abstracts, demos, and open discussion. Attendees are encouraged to bring presentation and/or demonstrations of mobile visual search techniques and applications.
